This application was developed as a recreational way to spend time with a basketball hoop and ball, be it mini or full-size, during the shelter-in-place period in Spring 2020, coinciding with the cancellation of a particular college tournament.
Game Rules
- Games consist of four rounds comprising 10 shots each (default setting but customizable from 3 to 15 shots) with increasing values: 1 point, 2 points, 3 points, and 4 points. Turning an individual basketball orange registers it as a successful shot; otherwise, leaving it gray will not count.
- Points are revealed only at the end of all four rounds for each team. An option to view statistics by round is also provided.
- If overtime is required, each team receives an additional round of shots, with each basket worth one point. Extra rounds are added per additional overtime period when needed.
Shooting Hand
- Teams are randomly assigned to shoot either right or left-handed, with the "better" team having a higher probability of shooting with their dominant hand. This probability is calculated independently for each team based on historical win probabilities in confrontations between respective seeds in the tournament. When seeds are equal or have never faced off, there is an equal 50 percent chance for each hand. Matches outside tournaments are simulated as if both teams have equal seeds.
Single Game
- In a single game, players select two teams with a 50% chance for each team to shoot either right or left-handed. This selection is computed separately for each team, allowing both to potentially shoot with the same hand.
- All Division 1 teams can be selected to play, not limited to tournament teams.
Tournament Mode
- Tournament mode requires users to choose either an existing bracket or create a customized one to select individual games by round or region. The active round can be altered using the +/- button within a specific tournament's menu (in List view style) or by choosing a different region (in Bracket view style). However, gameplay will not be possible until both teams are determined for a game (primarily pertinent in later rounds).
- Both men's and women's tournament brackets are accessible.
- Users may simulate tournament games (excluding single games) or even entire tournaments without gameplay; the winner will be determined based on historical win probabilities utilized for shooting hand allocation in non-simulated matches. Please note that no statistics will be saved and winners will receive a winning score of 1 to 0 per game.
Live Game Scores
- Real-time game scores are fetched via the ESPN API.
